full disclaimer. it works like having eyes or ears. i can just not look at you or go listening into your conversation and then never go into your space, but you're still there.
I assumed you possessed such control over it, or otherwise it would be maddening for you.
[Being unable to filter the thoughts of others when there are many, many people around, that is.]
It would not end well for you if it were otherwise. [Which is more of a statement than a threat. Vergil is deeply protective of his brother and son, and he would especially not tolerate anyone doing anything remotely similar to what Mundus did to him to them.] But I'm sure you already know that well enough by now.
[It doesn't take long for it to be known where Vergil stands when it comes to his family. Which, returning more to the point:]
I appreciate the assurances that you will look after Dante and Nero should anything happen to them.
[He's not ignorant to the fact she is including him in that by way of Sophie's choice in words including him, but Mr. Independent is very slow to warm up to the idea that anyone would go out of their way for him. Especially someone who is a relative stranger to him like Sophie.]
not only, but mostly. i've helped save the world like, once? that was nice.
right now i'm actually at nyx. same building, i asked them to bring it. i'm not the original owner or anything, but we're a team helping mutants out and providing a safe and educational space for them and allies and teaming up when shit happens.
By those without the gene, I assume? Fortunate then that you have a space carved out for each other. And that you do not find yourself without other mutants in this place as well.
[Vergil cannot say that he relates fully given that humans never posed a threat, nor did they ever suspect what he is, but he knows what it is to be relentlessly hunted for no reason other than the nature of his birth.]
[That it wouldn't be the same on both counts. He also cannot imagine others would go out of their way to mistreat one another as intensely as what she might face in her own world regardless. That would simply cause too many problems than it would be worth even if they felt justified in such behaviors.]
For what it is worth, my reservations about your abilities has nothing to do with you or that boy in particular.
[Not that he's gonna name where it comes from, BUT... He at least is not treating her with suspicion or setting down that boundary because he thinks she (or Quentin) would inherently misuse their abilities in the first place.]
you may refer to him as quentin or 'that idiot' only
no, but seriously, if you could extend the patience youre having for me to him? he sucks a bunch but like. not that much. just take him in good faith? maybe? and just for the record i have never said this. it's a complete original idea that you had if you do it
no but well people in general get weird about it. it's not just you.
While it is admirable for you to advocate for your friend, make no mistake that the patience I have been willing to extend to you is because my son likes you and considers you a friend. I have no desire to go out of my way and be rude to him, but I haven't any reason to offer him more tolerance than what I have afforded him thus far.
If he cannot mind himself, then he is better off having someone else act as an intermediary when it is necessary.
Dante is my little brother. That is different, and does not earn you any favors when he generally likes everyone.
[He is joking. About the part where it does not matter if Dante likes her not, anyways. He does observe Dante to being fairly open to most people, however. That part is absolutely true.]
I am certain he will appreciate it. I am uncertain Nero particularly cares for liquor, however. He would be more satisfied with a pack of beer.
Yes. We were born 20 minutes apart. The current discrepancy in our ages, however, is because I spent a couple of years in a liminal world like this one before arrival whereas Dante did not.
If it held any particular appeal to me, I would have said as much. As it is, I only drink occasionally because they see it as a bonding activity. It is of no interest to me otherwise. I also do not believe that even if it were possible for me to become inebriated more easily that I would enjoy it more.
huh. interesting. that would absolutely freak me out.
interesting also. what i do with a friend who can't get drunk is that i drink and share my drunkness with him. not offering since you already told me a huge no, but you know, if i had two dimes for people in etraya who told me they can't get drunk, i'd have two dimes. not much, interesting it happened twice.
Dante has been handling it remarkably well, all things considered. I do not envy his position relative to my own.
[He finds Dante's position to be far more off-putting between the two of them. Yes, he isn't truly aware of the separation in the same way Vergil is, but Dante was still exactly as Vergil had left him. Vergil, however, has been changing in all that time. For the better in most ways, but a change is still a change, and that is a difficult thing to account for.]
[That's also not accounting for Nero either, and the relationship between father and son that was distinctly not yet there by Dante's recollection.]
We have not had the opportunity to be brothers in a long time, and even with all that happens here, this is a sight better than the demon world. So, I believe that tempers the discomfort considerably.
In our case, it is our demonic blood. Our metabolism is faster than most. That is why Dante and Nero are able to eat the way they do with little consequence.
And before you ask, I do not eat like them because I am not indulgent when it comes to food. The opportunity for it to be indulgent has been a rare one for me throughout most of my life. I ate what could sustain me, not what appealed to me.
[Much to poor Nero's chagrin as he's been trying to figure out what the hell Vergil even really likes to eat. It is a good question! But not one that Vergil had many answers for at the beginning.]
it'd make me... i guess... uncomfortable. when i was brought back from the dead i would match my sisters age. thank fuck. this must be so fucking trippy i'm just
oof
but i'm happy for you guys for having the opportunity. it's important. and wait who is the demon in there like how did this become a thing
we should change that a little. you can live a bit you know
The human world and the demon world have always been separate places where we are from. Our father sealed them from one another two thousand years ago when he betrayed the demon king Mundus to protect humanity.
I do plenty. But there is a great deal that I have missed out on over the past few decades that trying to do all of it at once would be unreasonable even if my temperament were different.
Did the other two not explain anything about our heritage to you?
[He remembers her complaint from before that he apparently talks too much like this. So, he'd rather not send her a wall of text about their bloodline in that case.]

and yeah. i've been mindful about it. i promise.
