⏵ character information
name: Vergil
canon: Devil May Cry
age: 45
canon point: Post-Devil May Cry 5 with CRAU from Folkmore.
history: A wiki link for canon. In terms of CRAU, Vergil was in Folkmore for nearly 2 years. The conceit of the game is that characters willingly follow a fox spirit known as Thirteen to Folkmore with the opportunity to reach their potential. Vergil didn't care so much about that as he did finding an easier way from the demon world to the human world, and thought it would be easier to find that route from there. While in Folkmore, characters are also given roles of Myths, Legends, and Familiars. Behaving in ways that align with those roles heightened role-specific traits and abilities. Vergil was a Myth, which is a role often given to characters who tend to lean towards self-preservation above all. He did not develop any notable traits of a Myth during his tenure in Folkmore (although it would have been difficult to discern from his natural demonic abilities and features generally speaking even if he had), and aforementioned traits would not carry over beyond that world regardless. During his time there, Vergil had to interact with others enough to be able to summon Yamato, his favored blade inherited from his father, as currency in the world stemmed from interacting with others. It took him almost an entire year to do so due to his reluctance to engage in inane small talk.

Aside from that, during his time in Folkmore, Vergil was able to eventually reconnect with his twin brother, Dante, for a brief period of time (until Dante left Folkmore presumably for the underworld once more), and establish a relationship with his son, Nero. His swagless charm also managed to somehow get him into a romantic relationship that miraculously did not implode prior to coming to Etraya. Most of his other connections, however, tended to be fleeting as people came and went rather quickly through Folkmore. As a result of his experiences in Folkmore, Vergil is a little more willing to tolerate small talk with strangers (it was how one got fed at the end of the day), but he continues to be an undersocialized, feral weirdo on the whole as he does not exactly know how to make and keep friends still.

abilities:
Swordsmanship. Vergil is a highly skilled swordsman. His style of combat with Yamato is reflective of the Iaidou/Iaijutsu style wherein there is an emphasis on drawing the blade from its scabbard, striking, shaking the blood from the blade, and re-sheathing it. Vergil tends to also implement the scabbard in his techniques as well and will sometimes even attack with Yamato without ever unsheathing it. In addition to his skills with a blade, Vergil is also well-versed in hand-to-hand combat and although he tends to look down upon firearms, he is still an expert marksman with his mirage blades. Overall, Vergil is able to master most weapons fairly easily due to his skill.

Demonic Heritage. Due to Vergil's demonic heritage, he possesses the cliches of superhuman strength, speed, agility, stamina, and overall durability. His strength and speed may lessen as he expends his energy or suffers injuries from fights, which can reduce his overall effectiveness in a battle. Regarding his strength, Vergil is able to fend off creatures significantly larger than himself or do things like literally rip his own son's arm off even while in a weakened state. As far as his speed and agility are concerned, Vergil can often move faster than the human eye can track. For example, his slashes with his sword can be quick enough to prevent rain from hitting the ground or allow him to catch/deflect bullets in mid-air. It's notable that Yamato's own power heightens Vergil's already incredible speed and agility. In terms of his durability, that which would normally kill a human will be something Vergil will ultimately walk off. His accelerated healing means that as soon as whatever has caused the injury is removed, his body will begin to immediately repair the damage. This healing factor appears to work quite well for Vergil to keep him alive even when his other abilities may falter more significantly, but he's not indestructible and can still be bested.

Demonic Energy. Vergil can use his own demonic energy to manipulate objects. In particular, he tends to use this demonic energy to create mirage blades, which are spectral blades that will break upon impact with their target. These blades can be manipulated to be launched at a target like projectiles or encircle them and shooting towards the target at Vergil's will from that short distance. He can also use the mirage blades to create a protective circle around himself wherein anything that gets close will have to contend with the blades spinning around him. He can also create a spectral version of his father's blade Force Edge that's known as Mirage Edge. Unlike the mirage blades, however, Mirage Edge does not break/shatter upon impact and he's able to continue wielding it. Lastly, Vergil can use his demonic energy to create a doppelganger of himself (in SDT) to fight alongside him.

Sin Devil Trigger. The tl;dr version of this is that Devil Trigger is a form demons (or those with demonic heritage) take to unleash the full extent of their abilities both physical and supernatural. SDT is an even stronger form of that. For Vergil, this includes the transformation mentioned earlier in addition to heightening his abilities both natural (strength, speedy, and healing) and through Devil Arms like Yamato. He also has the ability to fly due to the wings. When Vergil activates his SDT, there is a force wave strong enough to knock others back onto the ground, protecting him just long enough to complete the transformation. Vergil can transform both in and out of SDT at will, but he cannot maintain SDT forever.

Teleportation. In addition to be superhuman levels of quick, Vergil also has the ability to teleport even in the absence of Yamato, but only a few feet away from his point of origin as a faaster means of dodging attacks.

personality:
⛈️ Due to the combination of his mother's inability to save him, his own inability to protect his family, and his father's blade being what ultimately kept him alive during the attack on his family, at the tender age of eight, Vergil came to the conclusion that humanity is ultimately a weakness. This began his lifelong quest for power—particularly reclaiming his father's power—in order to protect himself and prevent the tragedy that befell him as a child from ever happening again. In addition to that endless quest for power, Vergil also cast aside his emotions, viewing them as yet another weakness of humanity that demons did not suffer. As such, while little is known about how he got by in the intervening years from his mother's death to his confrontation with Dante, it is still quite safe to say that he avoided making connections among the humans of the world (barring Nero's mother, of course).

⛈️ When Vergil discovered his brother had survived that day, Vergil was confused by what he saw of Dante. Dante had yet to fully awaken his own demonic power, never mind how little interest he appeared to possess in reclaiming their father's power. Although Vergil tried to have Dante see things his way, even once Dante began acquiring power, the brothers were still in opposition about who and what they are, and their father's legacy. Too stubborn, too proud, and still too sure of his philosophy, Vergil ultimately rejected Dante's attempts to reach him and steer him away from his pursuit of power and ultimately his downfall.

⛈️ Vergil's worst nightmare since losing his family was finally made manifest after that. Although Vergil had also been far too proud and stubborn to yield willingly even under pain of death and torture, and it took Mundus more or less forcibly mindwiping him to control him, Vergil's enslavement to Mundus is something that fills Vergil with shame and he still has nightmares about it. But while that stubborn pride led to tragedy for Vergil, it is ultimately what kept him alive once broken free of Mundus' will. Vergil refused to die until he was able to face Dante again. Either he won and demonstrated his superiority over his brother, or he failed and it was one final defeat. Vergil was determined that it would not be the latter, and more literally cut his humanity (and trauma) from himself to access the full extent of his demonic power.

⛈️ While Vergil's demonic half brought about great calamity, his humanity came to realize and recognize that the small boy that he once was still lives on within him in spite of all that has happened to him. Furthermore, while he would never have acknowledged it before, Vergil realized that he had it all wrong. Beyond all the harsh, terrible consequences of his pursuit of power for himself, Vergil also came to realize all he has ever wanted since that fateful day was to be loved and protected.

⛈️ tl;dr: Vergil still has a lot of sharp edges. He often comes across as cold or callous due to his demeanor, which can be off-putting or intimidating at times. However, despite his difficulties (and some mild disinterest that still lingers given the risks that come with relying on others) with establishing connections with others, he is trying to be softer and kinder in his own way. He's more motivated to do so with family relative to others, but he is actively trying to figure out how to live life more as a human than he ever has before.
